research & concept
My initial impulse in researching for Urinetown was to look at the history of public bathrooms and what bathrooms look like around the world. Everyone has to go potty so what do those facilities look like globally.
As a collective, all of the designers came together to create on large research board that we could all refer to throughout the process. In the end of our design aesthetic centered around art deco art and diesel punk, a sub genre of steampunk focused on retro-futuristic technology. We had two distinct worlds that were centered around this aesthetic: the poor slum world of Public Amenity #9 and the rich corporate world of the Urine Good Company.
